Liverpool back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has admitted he could move to another club in order to fulfil his dream of becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The 25-year-old started as Ireland’s 2-0 Nations League defeat by England on Saturday, coming on as back-up to Alisson Becker at Anfield.
Meanwhile, the Reds have also signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, adding to the Reds’ already-inconsistent future.
Asked about his current situation, Kelleher said: “I’ve been very clear over the last two or three years. I want to be the No 1 and play every week. “
The club made the decision to bring in another goalkeeper. From the outside, it looks like they’ve decided in a different direction. “
“I made it clear in the last few years, I want to go be a No 1 and play week in, week out,” Kelleher said before Ireland’s game against Greece on Tuesday. “The club made the decision to get another goalkeeper. From the outside looking in, it looks like they have made a decision to go in another direction.
“My ambition has always been clear the last few seasons that I want to be a No 1, playing week in week out. Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like it is 100% my decision but at times it is not always in my hands.”
Kelleher, a two-time Carabao Cup winner with Liverpool, deputised ably for Alisson last season after the Brazilian sustained a hamstring injury, and made 26 appearances in total. He was linked with a move in January and again during the summer, when Nottingham Forest reportedly had a series of bids rejected.
Over the last two or three seasons, my ambition has been very clear: I want to be the No 1 and play every week. “
Sometimes from the outside, it looks like it’s my decision but sometimes it’s not always in my hands.”
Asked if he came close to moving in the summer, Kelleher said: “My mission is to play and be the No 1. “
There are reports that Liverpool have rejected some offers as well. But the decision is not always in my hands,” he said.
“My goal is to prove that I am good enough to play every week.”
